Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
ACCADEMIA TEATRO ALLA SCALA
Directed by Frédéric Olivieri

On Friday 1, Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 December 2023, for the first time ever, La Scala
Academy’s Dance School, directed by Frédéric Olivieri, will be at the Cirque Royal in
Brussels to perform the title that most closely ties in with the Christmas season, The
Nutcracker. The production is from Teatro alla Scala, signed by Roberta Guidi di Bagno with
music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreography by Olivieri himself from Lev Ivanov.

In the ACCADEMIA TEATRO ALLA SCALA’s repertoire since 2011, the Nutcracker offers
the enchantment of a choreography capable of recreating the fantastic, dreamlike
atmosphere of Ivanovič's original ballet, whose debut in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St.
Petersburg crowned the Russian composer's previous masterpieces, Swan Lake and
Sleeping Beauty, and the inspiration of Marius Petipa. Ivanov, replacing Petipa, had created
the choreography based on Dumas father's mitigated version of Ernst Hoffmann's dark tale
"Nutcracker and the Mouse King". The performers included Olga Preobrajenska, who
encouraged by Toscanini, later directed the Ballet School between 1921 and 1922.
The version proposed by Frédéric Olivieri put more than sixty dancers for five performances.
They were called upon to demonstrate remarkable technical and expressive skills in some of
the most famous pieces of the Russian romantic repertoire, from the Waltz of the snowflakes
to the pas de deux of the Sugarplum Fairy and the Prince, from the folk, Russian, Arab and
Chinese dances to the Waltz of the flowers.
